Some causes of pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD)
​
- pregnancy
- childbirth
- recurrent urinary tract infections
- constipation
- 3rd and 4th degree tears during childbirth
- menopause
- some gynae surgery
- occupations that require heavy lifting
Some symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction (but not limited to):

leaking urine when on the way to the toilet (urgency urinary incontinence) or leaking when coughing / laughing / sneezing / jumping (stress urinary incontinence)

leaking liquid / solid stool or not being able to control winds when you want to
-
a feeling of heaviness or dragging in the vagina
-
painful intercourse or urine leakage during intercourse

What can be done?

Thorough assessment of bladder / bowel / pelvic floor complaints

Physical examination (may include an internal examination once discussed with you)

Advice, exercises, change in habits, biofeedback and electrical stimulation – all according to the above findings.
An evidence-based treatment programme with emphasis on lifestyle changes, pelvic floor strengthening and a holistic approach to avoid surgery if possible is then formed – in consultation with you.
